Dragon's Eye Recordings is proud to announce the release of In Residence by Yann Novak. In Residence is the final product of three artist residencies Novak attended in the fall of 2007. From each residency a composition was born, compiled here based on their thematic similarities. On In Residence, Novak explores the feelings of isolation some artists experience while working in solitary conditions for long stretches of time. Novak utilized this time to push his process to the limit by abstracting his source materials beyond recognition. The result is a lonely sound world with distant sounds passing by, while the entire piece quivers with anticipation.

Dragon's Eye Recordings is pleased to announce the release of Pairings, the first full length collaboration between Marc Manning (Heavy Lids) and Yann Novak. Pairings is an exploration into a now standard formula, a traditional instrument processed by laptop. Novak and Manning choose to use the formula to explore their often similar emotional states resulting in six improvisations divided into pairs by instrument. The album moves gently through melancholic drones and ambient washes, ending in a soft flurry of fractured melodies. Pairings showcases the tender relationships between songs, instruments and musicians.

1. Intermission
Intermission was composed to accompany A Sac of Rooms Three Times a Day, an installation by artist Alex Schweder, which premiered at Suyama Space in Seattle, WA. The installation was comprised of two transparent, vinyl houses, one inside the other, that would inflate and deflate three times a day.
Derived from recordings of the four inflation fans, Intermission accompanied the piece during its two hour deflated phase; referencing its past movement, future activity, and resting present. The edited version of Intermission presented here, divorced of its surroundings, evokes the stillness and emptiness of a tundra landscape, creating its own environment of calm contemplation.

1. Live 10.18.06
Auditorium is a live sound collaboration between Seattle artist Yann Novak and Victoria artist Jamie Drouin. The two artists first met on a panel discussion hosted by Seattle’s 2006 Decibel Festival at the Henry Art Gallery, and both immediately recognized a connection between their two bodies of soundwork; using altered field recordings and sharing a mutual interest in exploring the ability of sound to alter the atmosphere of spaces we inhabit—physically and emotionally.
Two months later, the two artists met once again at the Henry Art Gallery to perform Auditorium, which uses the performance space itself as a sonic point of departure. Recordings made by Novak of the empty space were amplified and layered to create a singular, modulating drone which enhanced the particular ‘fingerprint’ of the space. Drouin’s approach was to define the space with a more scalpel-like hand, inserting sonic pings and rhythms which called attention to the depth and scale of the auditorium, and to interject more textural sounds which would occassionally push the listeners attention outside of the building, reminding them of the thin membrane between the inside/outside worlds.

1. Brooklyn in Seattle (altered)
Gretchen Bennett and Yann Novak are proud to present there ongoing collaborative installation piece The East River Project. The Installation combines online downloads and direct street encounters to activate the public space of the neighborhood they inhabit, The International District. The web site is a base camp for the street installation, where you’ll find a downloadable map with the perimeters of the installation and a downloadable MP3, as well as instructions on its use. The order in which the walk should be experienced is completely open, so each view of the work is unique, to preserve the element of discovery.
To celebrate the launch of this exciting project Bennett and Novak have created a hand made and signed CD / Decal set in an edition of 25 and released on Novak’s own Dragon’s Eye Recordings. The CD contains a new score by Yann Novak produced entirely from Bennett’s field recordings of Brooklyn. The CD is packaged with a white decal for the consumer to place in their environment to further blur the boundaries of the installation.

Based loosely around the recent loss of his mother, “meadowsweet” departs from rhythm altogether and focuses on beautiful and delicate drones, whispers of people, and environments once inhabited.
