The current global climate of anxious anticipation receives further expression through Reflections Of A Gathering Storm. Interdisciplinary artist Yann Novak, based in Los Angeles, generates sombre billows of sepulchral electronic tones that swell and surround. Even the opening movement, entitled “A Trembling Of Light”, looms in the air, an ominous presence rather than the gentle intimation its name suggests. Novak is fascinated by ways in which sound and light, despite their intangibility, are filtered through the senses and take shape within our understanding as conscious perception. He is drawn to registers of mood and shadings of intuition. The sustained ambience of this work leads in its closing section, The Thrill Of Approaching Destruction, to a claustrophobic sense of inevitability.

Der Kalifornier Yann Novak hat die beeindruckende und einzigartige Fähigkeit, massives orchestrales Dröhnen und finsteren Noise in schwerelos schwebenden Ambient zu transformieren und dabei den Schmerz, die Katharsis der gesampelten Werke spürbar zu halten, ohne sie in Wohlgefallen aufzulösen, aber auch ohne dass sie weitere Wunden schlagen könnten. Ist das therapeutischer Drone? Jedenfalls sind die Klänge Novaks auf Reflections of a Gathering Storm (Playneutral, 22. April) – wie eigentlich in jeder seiner Veröffentlichungen – in der delikaten Balance von Schönheit und Dunkelheit sofort wiedererkennbar und unmittelbar verständlich. Novak kennt eben seinen Schmerz – und unseren – und weiß damit umzugehen.

Wenn man sich nicht inmitten eines Sturmes befindet, wirkt die Welt friedlich und das Unheil unendlich weit weg. Ausblenden sollte man die Möglichkeit einer Katastrophe oder eines Zwischenfalles nicht, vor allem wenn die Vorzeichen auszumachen sind. Mit der EP «Reflections of a Gathering Storm» versucht Yann Novak diesen Zustand zu erfassen, klanglich mit drei Ambient-Tracks und flächigen Synthesizerspuren.
Unsicherheiten und Verletzlichkeit sind in der heutigen Zeit leider in jedem Land alltäglich, das Zusammenleben scheint auseinanderzubrechen. Mit «A Trembling of Light» zeigt uns Yann Novak die Möglichkeit zum Innehalten auf, Reflektion, Atmung und Beobachtung werden drei wichtige Stichwörter. Das war bei «Lifeblood of Light and Rapture» bereits so, eine Umgebung ohne Menschen und mit viel Leere ist der bestmögliche Ausgang. Fatalistisch will der Künstler mit seiner Musik trotzdem nicht sein, Hoffnungen und Sehnsüchte schweben in der Musik.
Leichte Melodien über Texturen und Drones, «The Part of Her That Could Feel Was Gone» lässt einzelne Klänge in Verzerrungen aufgehen, bei «The Thrill of Approaching Destruction» wird die Dunkelheit intensiver und die Schatten länger. Zusammenstehen und Unterstützung bieten, das lernt man mit Yann Novak. Die Veröffentlichung ist zeitgenössische Musik, die zuerst unscheinbar wirkt, aber viel Intensität und Gefühl in sich trägt.

Artiste interdisciplinaire et compositeur installé à Los Angeles, Yann Novak produit des albums numériques assez courts. Comme j’avais manqué l’un des précédents, il sera abordé à la suite de Reflections of a Gathering Storm qui vient de sortir. Pour ce dernier, Yann Novak précise qu’il souhaitait explorer le sentiment nébuleux d’instabilité et d’insécurité qui semble imprégner actuellement nos vies. Aussi a-t-il cherché à se rendre vulnérable sur cet enregistrement. Il a associé des sons synthétisés à des enregistrements de sa propre voix, essayant de chanter. Les morceaux tentent de faire écho à cette délicate précarité, comme si nous étions au bord de l’effondrement. Les titres des trois titres renvoient à cette expérience particulière : un tremblement de lumière / la partie d’elle qui pouvait ressentir avait disparu / le frisson de la destruction imminente.
C’est une musique électronique ambiante mouvante, grondante, comme une nébuleuse (en effet) en voyage, avec des attaques particulaires vibrantes, chargées de drones. Le monde vacille sur sa base, la lumière tremble (titre 1). Un chant, à peine un chant dans le lointain des nuages de drones dans lesquels tournent des spirales noires. Un orgue ne parvient plus à diffuser ses nappes, déchirées et froissées, hachées, il n’en reste que des bribes menacées, cernées (titre 2). Quel frisson monte ? Quelque chose d’énorme est sur le point d’éclore, de tout recouvrir. Angoisse somptueuse… et soudain une poussée formidable de lumière trouble, la venue du cataclysme, sur les bords du ravage, comme un bateau au sommet de l’entonnoir du maëlstrom. On ne peut que se laisser glisser, happer par l’envoûtante douceur mortelle.

Yann Novak says “On Reflections of a Gathering Storm, I wanted to explore the nebulous sense of instability and insecurity that currently seems to permeate our lives” going on to say that he wanted to represent sonically “something that felt like it was on the verge of collapse”. Whether or not he has accomplished that, I don’t know. There’s certainly an incredibly ominous feel about the recordings here, of which the opening track A Trembling of Light feels like strangely mutated organ tones, and the impression that the instrument is shuddering and being shaken apart. Pretty much the same mood permeates The Part of Her That Could Feel Was Gone, albeit a tad more frazzled and raw. The Thrill of Approaching Destruction has a contradictory positive emotion to its title, but then gets a little more ominous at the end as pensive bass drones seem to warn of some calamity that doesn’t happen.

Forse sarebbe più opportuno fare riferimento a Pauline Olivers o Eliane Radigue, ma l’ultimo lavoro di Novak a me fa venire in mente il Lou Reed di “Junior Dad”, una nenia commossa e compassionevole di fronte a una umanità provata e stremata dalla sua fragilità. Se Metal Machine Music è stato visto anche come un disco ambient, anche i tre pezzi di “Reflections of a Gathering Storm” possono essere benissimo delle canzoni. Bellissimo, toccante, ep pure sospeso, troppo breve disco. Un senso di leggerezza alita e ondeggia su una musica che vorreb be, dovrebbe essere opprimente e oppressa.
